Core Idea

Within-Cluster Error

K = 1 → WCSS = 1000
K = 2 → WCSS = 600
K = 3 → WCSS = 350
K = 4 → WCSS = 250
K = 5 → WCSS = 220
K = 6 → WCSS = 205

Elbow

Error
 |
 | *
 |  *
 |    *
 |      *
 |       * *
 |           *
 +----------------
        K

Elbow

Intuition

K=1 → খুব poor clustering
K=2 → huge improvement
K=3 → huge improvement
K=4 → moderate improvement
K=5 → tiny improvement
K=6 → tiny improvement

K ≈ 4

Important Limitation

Where exactly is the elbow?

Silhouette Score
Cluster Stability
Domain Knowledge
Business Interpretability
Cluster Size
Business Usefulness

Business Example

Algorithm

K = 8

4 customer segments

Interview-ready Explanation

The Elbow Method is a heuristic used to choose the number
of clusters in K-Means.

We train K-Means for different values of K and plot the
within-cluster sum of squares.

As K increases, the error decreases.

The elbow is the point after which adding more clusters
provides relatively little improvement.

However, a clear elbow does not always exist, so other
criteria such as silhouette score, cluster stability,
domain knowledge, and business usefulness should also
be considered.
